Former Littlehampton mayor launches new community initiative

FORMER Littlehampton mayor Joyce Bowyer helped to launch a new community initiative during the town’s weekly market.

Joyce, who is currently a Littlehampton Town councillor, joined market traders to help promote a new venture which could see voluntary organisations and community groups getting a welcome boost in funding and publicity.

Joyce, along fellow councillors Marian Ayres and Jill Long, were hosting the debut launch of the new market stall scheme, set up by the council and market operator Southern Countries Markets.

The scheme aims to provide a free space for community organisations who wish to use it for fund-raising or to give out information about their services and has already proven a popular choice, with the weekly stall fully booked until the start of next year.

Joyce, who was selling home-made jams cakes and other delicious treats for charity, said: “We have had a very positive response at the council about the stall.

“There’s a great mix of stalls here.

“It’s a thriving market and a great opportunity for community groups not just to fund-raise but to promote awareness, too.”

She added: “We welcome any voluntary group in Littlehampton to it.

“Anything from local charities to sports clubs.

“This is the first stall of its kind here at the market, and my team and I am hopeful it will have a long and bright future ahead of it.”

Joyce’s stall managed to raise £412 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, which was her chosen charity last year as town mayor.

Applying for the stall is free.

The market organisers provide a gazebo.

Applicants are only asked to bring their own tables and other items for the day.

To register for the stall, located under the clock tower, in High Street, call the Littlehampton Town Council on, 01903 732063.
