Fowlers finish epic year of heart research fundraising
A couple from Worthing are celebrating the successful completion of a year spent running for charity.
Keith and Catherine Fowler took part in 13 half marathons, full marathons and ultra-marathons, running more 5,000 miles between them in support of Heart Research UK.
The pair have been raising money in memory of Tim Fleming, Catherine’s father, who sadly died of an aortic dissection in 2015. Aortic dissection is a rare but life-threatening condition where there is a tear in the inner layer of the aorta, the main artery which carries blood from the heart to the body.
Keith and Catherine has raised £5,528.97 so far, which has helped to fund a masterclass to give surgeons hands on experience of performing aortic arch surgery. As aortic dissection is rare, surgeons will not come across patients who need aortic arch surgery very often, however when they do it is almost always an emergency. The surgery is difficult to train for, given the condition’s rarity and the complexity of the procedure.
Among the many different events Keith and Catherine took part in, one was particularly special. The whole family ran the Richmond Half Marathon on September 18 in Tim’s local and favourite park, the day before the first ever Global Aortic Dissection Awareness Day.
Keith also completed the first ever multi-storey carpark race in February. This involved running 71 laps of a multi-storey carpark in Worthing.
