Free home security survey

Vulnerable and disabled people living around Bognor Regis have been encouraged to use a free security survey of their home.

The SAFE/Handyperson Service is run by Anchor Staying Put, a not-for-profit home improvement agency run by the Anchor Trust.

It provides a survey that looks at the security of windows and doors.

Matters such as lighting and other items that can make residents feel safer and make their homes more secure are also considered.

After it has been completed, the handyman will give recommendations and, if applicable, discuss the provision of security measures. A full package of locks, doors, bars or chains can be provided and installed as well as window locks and spy holes for just 15.

All callers carry identification and will contact residents before visiting.

Roger Wood, the deputy head of Arun District Council's environmental health service, said: 'The aim of this scheme is to reduce fear of crime for older people by providing a trustworthy and skilled worker for the odd jobs that older people can't do themselves.

'Both Arun and Worthing have high populations of elderly people and they can be an easy target for rogue traders, conmen and sometimes even burglars.

'It's not an expensive service. You only pay for the materials plus a small administration charge of 15 and all quotations are free.'

Anchor Staying Put works with Arun District Council, Worthing Borough Council, West Sussex County Council's caring and social services and Sussex Police.
