Recognising the efforts Nathan has made to overcome challenges, the award means £714 has been presented to the Worthing home to pay for six weeks’ worth of multi-disciplinary therapy for him.

Nathan received the cheque from Geoffrey Barber, chairman of the foundation, which stands for Challenge is an Opportunity.

Mr Barber faced his own life-changing challenge, having survived an horrific car crash in 2001.

At the time, he faced the real possibility of never being able to walk again but used sheer determination, strength and belief to embrace the challenge as an opportunity to progress.

He said that in doing so, he transformed his thinking and practice. He resolved to pass on this learning and encourage others who were going through or had overcome their own challenges.

Nathan, who was diagnosed with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) following a 16-year career in the intelligence section of the Army, was nominated by the home for the Primrose Award.

He has suffered two brain haemorrhages, in 2002 and 2010, and the second left him registered disabled.

Nathan has overcome many challenges, such as learning to walk again independently, managing regular and debilitating fits which have now become less frequent, and re-learning old skills such as photography and painting.

However, there are still obstacles which Nathan must overcome before being fully rehabilitated and discharged from the home.

The donation will pay for occupational therapy sessions that will help him to live independently.

Mr Barber and foundation trustee Andrew Rogers visited the home for a tour of the facilities and to present Nathan with the cheque.

Clare Smith, trust, foundation and legacy officer at the home, said: “We are so grateful to The CiaO Foundation for recognising not only the challenges which Nathan has been faced with, but the many opportunities which his future holds.

“The award will have a very direct and lasting impact on Nathan’s rehabilitation.”
