Future of beach beauty spot is looked at by MP

Bexhill MP Greg Barker met with Councillor Joanne Gadd at Herbrand Walk beach to hear residents' fears about its future.

He expressed personal concern about the use of jet skis and is urging Rother District Council to take “a strong line” in enforcing its boat lane and make clear what is allowed.

He said he would also contact the Department of Transport to clarify regulation surrounding use of jet-skis.

He told the Observer his major worry was “the health and safety of local residents who want to enjoy the lovely beach we are blessed with”.

He added: “The fact of the matter is jet skis can kill, and have actually killed people in the past.

“I am worried that often these very powerful machines are driven by inexperienced people, young people, or people who are not insured.

“Many local residents think they are being used far too closely to the shore.

“The danger is in coming into contact with swimmers.

“We need much tighter control of these machines which in many places are not allowed.

“I want to preserve the peace and quiet and family access to the coastline at Cooden.”

The meeting was disturbed by an unexpected approach from a South Cliff resident, who said he was in full support of development on the beach and jet skis being used there.

A passer-by commented: “He stomped right up to Greg Barker to make his views known - democracy in action.”

Meanwhile Cllr Gadd has answered accusations made by Steve Hall, owner of part of the beach, that she overstepped herself in organising shingle he moved from the roadside to be pushed back up by the Environment Agency.

Mr Hall claimed that she had “no right” to do this and she was not part of any department which had the necessary jurisdiction.

Cllr Gadd replied: “Mr Hall commenced forming a parking area without planning permission on Herbrand Walk beach.

“He was instructed by RDC’s enforcement officer to replace the shingle on May 19.

“This was not carried out.

“Why Mr Hall says that I have made it personal I really do not know. Moving the shingle back was done to safeguard people from tripping over the drop of nearly eight inches from the road. Residents or visitors could have tripped over this and caused an accident or serious car accident.

“Mr Hall should thank me because he would be responsible for the outcome.

“Mr Hall did not enhance himself to the public in the first instance by having residents and visitors clamped and being charged a colossal figure to be released.

“My main concern as a councillor for St Mark’s ward is to look after my constituents because that is who I represent.”

Steve Hall commented that he had received an enforcement letter from RDC last May, which informed him he acted without planning permission and the matter would go to council, but that he had heard nothing further on the subject.
