The annual event, in its sixth year, is organised and run by Karen Winstanley, a childminder from Broadwater and chairman of Worthing Playday Association.

She said it had been a ‘massive success’, as always. The downpour at lunchtime did not dampen their spirits and rain definitely did not stop play.

“Worthing Playday Association provided stalls including messy art and crafts, cardboard heaven and two car wrecks for the children to cover in newspaper and wallpaper paste, which they absolutely love,” she said.

“The most popular stall provided by the association was the shaving foam. Every year sees thousands of children enjoying being covered in shaving foam. The laughter can be heard across the green.

“We had more than 52 stallholders this year, all giving up their time for free to set up a stall and put on an activity for the children, including face painting, clay modelling, art and crafts, beach volleyball, shooting goals, soft play equipment to climb on, nutrition stands and more.”

The event was opened by Worthing town crier Bob Smytherman and more than eight acts performed in the Entertainment Square during the day, including £1 Family Fit Club, gymnastics and Bee-Fit, which opens and closes the entertainment every year.

Karen started Worthing Playday six years ago with three playworkers. They have now moved on but Karen continues, with the help of volunteer adults and children, the stallholders and local businesses that sponsor the event.

She added: “I had seven volunteers this year, all giving up their day to help make the children’s day a special one by helping them out and supporting their play.”
