From garage to global: 50 years marked by firm

A BUSINESS which grew from a single product produced in a garage to a global brand has celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Eurotherm by Schneider Electric now produces a wide range of temperature control and data recording equipment, with its base in Faraday Close, Durrington.

Vice president and managing director Chris Ashworth said: “The success we have had over the last 50 years is really about two things, our innovation as a company and our people.

“We have a talented and knowledgeable employee base who support both our sales organisation and our customers.

“A testament to this is that we have a very high number of employees who have been with us for well over 25 years and when we celebrate an employee anniversary often the key sentiment is that it’s the people that work here that make Eurotherm so special.”

The firm, previously owned by Invensys, was subject to a reported £3.4 billion takeover by Schneider in 2013.

Product development started in a garage in Worthing in 1965 and resulted in the birth of the MK1 Temperature Controller.

This first solid state control product exploited the rapidly expanding high-technology electronics of the 1960s.

Today, Eurotherm products are present in everything from cars to mobile phones.

Mr Ashworth said: “Eurotherm products touch nearly every aspect of modern life, from the safer car you drive, the electronic circuitry in your phone, to the prescription pills that aid quality of life, even your early morning bottle of milk.

“It’s no coincidence that heat treatment, life sciences, glass, plastics, food and beverage are the focus industries and where Eurotherm application expertise lies.”

The firm plays an active role in the community, supporting local colleges and universities, graduate engineers and many of its employees are STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) ambassadors.

“We support local graduate engineers to join Eurotherm, and they are attracted by our proven capability for innovation and world firsts,” said Mr Ashworth.

“These graduates bring fresh ideas and innovative thinking which is crucial in enabling the business to continue development of new industrial solutions to bring further growth.”
