GCSE results: A ‘successful year’ at St Andrew’s High School

The school, in Sackville Road, said it had seen significant achievements in a number of subjects, including modern foreign languages, computer sciences, RE and the humanity subjects. A spokesman for the school said that with the current year 11 cohort having ‘lower starting points’ than previous years, the school was very pleased with 60 per cent of students achieving at least five A*-C grades.

There were many key areas of successes across the school, the spokesman said. Computer science achieved 87.5 per cent pass rate and this high percentage grade was matched in Computer Technology which achieved 81 per cent. Modern foreign languages achieved well with French achieving 84.6 per cent and German achieving 68 per cent. Religious Education, a compulsory subject for all students at St Andrew’s, rose for the second year running, achieving 73.2 per cent. Statistics achieved 82 per cent, mathematics 65 per cent and the individual sciences achieving well with physics at 97.4 per cent, and biology and chemistry at 84.2 per cent. More successes were seen in the arts with drama rising to 85.7 per cent and photography and art & design achieving over 70 per cent for the second year running.

Head teacher Steve Mercer said: “These results consolidate our ‘Good’ Ofsted from this academic year. St Andrew’s is committed to supporting our young men’s cultural and social journey but equally provides a personalised learning path for each student where they enjoy academic success; demonstrated in the number of ‘star’ students, achieving 12 A and A* grades.”

He added: “With the average number of GCSEs taken by all students, inclusively, being 12, it shows we are right to offer the range of pathways to our students at Key Stage 4. Our curriculum pattern was praised in our recent Ofsted and the rise in achievement in so many subjects evidences this. St Andrew’s wishes all our students the very best of luck for the future and we look forward to hearing of their continued successes at the next stage of their journey.”

Among the school’s top achievers were: Harry Williams – 1A*, 8 As, 3 Bs; Jack Zottola – 3 A*s, 6 As, 4 Bs; Nathan Gorrell – 9 A*s, 3 As, 1 B; Matt LeClerc – 2 A*s, 8 As, 3 Bs; Dan Tupper – 4 A*s, 6 As, 3 Bs; and Karl Sengebush – 3 A*s, 8 As, 3 Bs.
