Girl pays respects to war relative

A WORTHING student has paid respect to a long-lost relative who died in the war, during a visit to the battlefields and cemeteries of WWI.

Natasha Palmer, 14, of Our Lady of Sion school, in Gratwicke Road, Worthing, visited the sites at the Somme, Ypres and Vimy Ridge, with fellow students on a school trip last month.

But for her, the trip was extra special, as she became the first member of her family to visit the grave of her great-great-uncle, Private W.I. Griffiths.

She laid a commemorative wreath on the grave, supplied by the Royal British Legion.

She said: “I didn’t know how to feel visiting the grave of a relative whom I never knew.

“However, when I was actually there, I found it very moving, particularly because he died so young.

“I felt very special to be the first relative to have ever visited his grave.”

A total of 48 students attended the three-day tour, which Sion have done for 25 years.
