The evening was directed by Farlington’s Jane and David Thomas, with stunning choreography by Lucy Cooper and Natalie van de Braam, and sound by Brian Dallimore.

Magic is a word that is used far too often to apply to events that are good but not genuinely magical: Farlington’s ‘Magic of the Musicals’ was honestly, truly and quite genuinely, magical. The audience was taken on a time-travelling tour through music, song and dance, beginning with the exhilarating tap-dancing beat of ‘42nd Street’ which opened the show with dazzle, glamour and pathos. Then the younger members of the school charmed with a medley from ‘The Lion King’ before we were whirled back to New York for the raw dancing and powerful drama of ‘West Side Story’.

The second half took us to 30’s Berlin, where the beguiling Emcee welcomed us to a pulsating ‘Cabaret’ in his decadent Kit Kat Klub; then it was off to Oxford, where ‘The Bluestocking’ successfully mixed humour with catchy 20’s-style music against a backdrop of the fight for women’s education. A rousing medley of songs from ‘Les Misérables’ brought the whole 90-strong cast together for a finale both moving and uplifting and - yes – magical!
