Clive Roberts, Worthing Borough Council’s cabinet member for environment, said he would allocate around £50,000 from an under-spend in his portfolio so that the work could be carried out.

Mr Roberts added that the work would take place ‘weather permitting’.

Councillor Mark Nolan, who has been actively involved with the Goring Road traders affected by the closure of the car park, welcomed the news.

He said: “It sounds very encouraging. I would be quite surprised if the weather was able to prevent it for a period of four months.”

A new traders association has been launched following the outcry from the traders, after the closure of the car park. The Goring Traders Association already has 20 members and five committee members.

Mr Nolan said: “I am delighted that the traders have come together to show their commitment to Goring and its customers.”

Jeremy French, chairman of the traders association, added: “It gives us a reference point where everyone can know what’s going on.”
