GP dies after catching fire in garden

A GP from Littlehampton who worked in Ferring died after being found on fire in her back garden.

Police officers were called to the home of Julia Cross, in Lime Grove, on 12.55am on Wednesday, April 16, after receiving reports of her being on fire.

Officers and neighbours put the fire out with water and the 36-year-old was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

She died later that day.

She had worked as a GP at The Barn Surgery, in Ferring Street.

In a statement released on its website, the surgery said: “The partners and staff at the surgery are joining the community in expressing shock and sadness at the news of the tragic death of Dr Julia Cross on Wednesday, April 16. We have opened a book of condolence which patients can sign if they would like to.”

Police have said they are not treating the death as suspicious and the coroner’s office is continuing enquiries.
