Greg supports carers

By: Daniel Collins MP GREGORY Barker has given his full support to the Carers Week 2007 campaign after the introduction of new government measures to improve the support and access to services for carers across the constituency.

Carers Week 2007, which takes place between June 11 - 17, aims to highlight the impact that being a carer can have, whether struggling to make ends meet, missing out on promotion at work or watching relationships suffer.

Mr Barker's support for the campaign comes after the launch of a country-wide consultation with carers and voluntary organisations to update the 1999 Carers Strategy.

Under the New Deal for Carers, local authorities in England will be allocated a share of 25 million to provide emergency support and a further 5 million will be spent on a caring training programme.

Mr Barker said: "Sometimes it is important to put Party politics to one side and back an important campaign such as Carers Week 2007. With over 737,000 carers in the South East, with a significant number within Bexhill and Battle, providing unpaid care, such as looking after an ill, frail or disabled family member, everyday life can be very difficult to manage. I therefore welcome this much needed campaign and the new funding for carers as it recognises the huge contribution that they make to society."
