Guitar Hero: Warriors of RockXbox 360, PS3, Wii

We’ve been swamped with music games over the last few years, each one offering more plastic instruments and ever-expanding lists of songs to put blisters on your fingers.

We’re used to topping up our tracklists with downloadable song packs and albums, so the idea of buying a new disc every few months already seems a bit, well, old fashioned.

The latest Guitar Hero game, Warriors of Rock, makes a good effort at justifying yet another disc of songs and a new guitar controller but in the end it still feels like more of the same.

The twist this time is that the game comes with a Quest Mode. Where previous games just took you from venue to venue, playing songs to earn stars to boost your pretend career, now you’re on a mission to save rock n’ roll itself. The familiar characters from previous Guitar Hero games return, but now they have the power to transform into rocking monsters and superheroes, all the better to save rock music from the clutches of The Beast.

Quest Mode is certainly fun, but it’s really just a change in presentation. The improvements to the actual gameplay are less dramatic. There’s a new Quickplay+ mode, which adds 13 specific challenges to all the 90 songs on the disc, as well as any songs you’ve imported from any Guitar Hero game from Band Hero onwards.

These challenges take the form of things like Band Streak, High Score and Power Challenge, and at least give you a reason to replay the tracks for more than just idle amusement.

The new guitar controller has been overhauled for faster playing, and can now be customised with new body parts, but with Rock Band 3 coming soon, with a real six-string guitar as the controller, dedicated rockers may want to save their money.
