A 17-year-old boy has been charged with assault, theft from a shop and possessing a firearm with intent to resist arrest after stealing an iPhone and hitting a shop assistant on the head with a handgun on Wednesday.

The teenager had grabbed an iPhone being shown to him at Surfs Up Communication in Montague Street, Worthing, on February 19 and ran off with it down the street but was chased by a shop assistant.

In Marine Parade he turned and confronted the assistant with what appeared to be a handgun, striking him on the head with it and punching him.

Despite this, the shop assistant retrieved the iPhone and the suspect fled.

Soon afterwards police went to an address in Worthing where the suspect was arrested and a ball-bearing gun was recovered.

The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been remanded to youth detention accommodation to await an appearance before Chichester Crown Court on Thursday, 6 March.

Anyone who saw what happened or who has other relevant information is asked to phone Sussex Police on 101 or email, quoting serial 1119 of 19/2.
