Has the northern A27 route been dropped?

Highways England appears to have dropped options for a new A27 route north of Chichester, as well as the option for a new part southern route.

There were seven options being considered, two for a new bypass through Lavant, one for a new southern deviation, and four for upgrades to the existing stretch.

A statement on the Highways England website reads: “We have assessed a range of options, many of which have been considered during the long history of this project and we will present this context during the consultation.

“Our focus, in line with the expectations set out in the Government’s Road Investment Strategy (RIS), will be on upgrading four junctions on the existing A27 and we will be consulting on a number of options and permutations.”

Highways England is yet to confirm that it has definitely dropped all other options away from upgrading the roundabouts on the existing stretch.

However, according to Mike Hall, district councillor for Lavant, council chief executive Diane Shepherd told a meeting last night that she had received an email from the secretary of state confirming the new northern and southern options would be dropped.

In an email she said: “You will see that Highways England will now only be consulting on upgrades to the four junctions on the existing A27.

“Therefore the northern and partial southern by-pass routes are no longer option.”

It follows yesterday’s announcement that the seven-week public consultations, due to start this month, has been delayed again until late spring/early summer.
