Heads we win-sculptures 'saved'

THE DESERT Quartet look likely to have been saved and will remain in Worthing after gaining listed status on Friday. The sculptures, by Dame Elisabeth Frink, have been given a Grade II* rating by the Government's Department for Culture, Media and Sport .

The sculptures, at the side of the Montague Centre in Liverpool Gardens, have been rated as 'particularly important buildings of more than special interest'.

The decision to list the heads has set a precedent because they are the only sculptures or public art monument to be listed below the 30-year rule which stipulates that even key heritage assets such as this might not be listed if installed within the preceding 30 years.

The sculptures, which were unveiled in 1990, are therefore regarded by English Heritage and the Department for Culture as of 'truly outstanding importance' and 'potentially at risk'.

The decision follows a campaign by the Worthing Society to prevent the owners of the Montague Centre, the Avon Group, from removing the heads.
