A SUPPORT group for people with a gluten intolerance has been launched with a monthly drop-in café in Worthing.
The West Sussex branch of Coeliac UK now holds its drop-in sessions at the Green Cuisine café in Rowlands Road on the second Tuesday of every month, from 10am to noon.
The first meeting, held on February 14, saw members and non-members of the group drop by for information.
Group organiser William Andrews said: “We had 17 people turn up to the first meeting, which was more than I expected.
“People were very happy a new support group has been set up and were very keen on helping out, which is fantastic.”
Coeliac UK has 800 members living in West Sussex. The disease affects one in 100 people in the UK, however, only one in eight cases are diagnosed.
There is no cure or medication for the disease, and the only treatment is to follow a strict gluten-free diet.
William, who is a coeliac himself, said: “I was very unwell for many years before I was diagnosed, and as soon as I cut out gluten from my diet, my health improved instantly.
“The problem is, often gluten can be in products which you don’t expect, and many of the newly diagnosed do not know where to turn to for advice.”
The group plans to hold social events including food sampling with gluten-free suppliers, excursions and organised meals in restaurants.
