Heatwave is ‘just what the doctor ordered’

TRADERS are cashing in on the ‘best weather for years’ as the heatwave provides hope for businesses which struggled with inclement weather in recent months.

Firms across the area have reported an upturn in trade, as residents and visitors flock to the coast.

In Worthing, not only was footfall up on the same period last year, but three-quarters of businesses reported an increase in sales.

Town centre manager Sharon Clarke said: “The seafront was absolutely buzzing.

“While footfall is not necessarily a reflection on spending in shops, from the businesses we get an indication from, 75 per cent have said their sales are up on last year.

“Cafes, restaurants and bars are seeing a good upturn, and most traders are seeing a positive response at the moment.”

A total of 30,000 visitors were recorded last Saturday, and 15,000 on Sunday – up by 4,000 and 1,000 respectively on last year’s figures.

Candy Love owner Paul O’Brien said: “We have been selling masses of cold drinks. Even the foreign students from Spain are complaining about how hot it is.”
