High standard at Ferring show praised

A colourful display of the many types of plants and vegetables that members had grown gave the visitors plenty to see at the show.

Horticultural judge Paul Dalby said he was pleased with the high standard and the variety of the exhibits.

Gwenda Ford and Peter Mazillius shared the WHR Cup for most points in the show, having gained identical results.

Mr Mazillius won classes for pinks, pelargonium, sweet peas and fuchsia, while Mrs Ford won classes for shrubs, hydrangeas, pot plants, cactus and phalenopsis.

Other cup winners included:- Mrs Norma Cummings, Gladys Butler Cup for floral art; Martin Ford, Butler Cup for mixed garden flowers, and Gladiolus Cup; Mrs Wink Power, Garden Flowers Cup for a vase of outstanding agapanthus, and Gilligan Bowl for the best exhibit in show; Jim Gray, Adpar-Jones Cup for one perfect rose; John Peters, Rose Cup for most points in the rose classes; Gordon Welch, Sweet Pea Cup; Gwyneth Klemenz, Hanging Basket Cup; Diane Dumbleton, Fruit Cup.

In the homecraft section, Mrs Bitsey Browne won the Williamson Cup for her lime and coconut, judged by Mrs Janet Melvin, who said it was an unusual recipe.

First prize winners were Mrs B. Browne, Mr J. Clarke, Mr P. Clear, Mrs N. Cummings, Mrs N. Drew, Mr R. Dumbleton, Mrs D. Dumbleton, Mr M. Ford, Mrs G.M. Ford, Mr J. Gray, Mrs L. Gray, Mrs E. Green, Mr G. Hicks, Mrs G. Klemenz, Mrs P. Joslin, Mr P. Mazillius, Mr B. Norton-Wight, Mr J. Peters, Mrs W. Peters, Mrs W. Power, Mrs S. Smith, Mr R. Sullivan, Mr G. Welch, Mrs M. Welch, Mr R. Wilde.

Visitors enjoyed the tea and cakes provided by the women from the catering team.

Jennie’s Jams had a stall in aid of the NSPCC and, with the jewellery stall, it appealed to visitors’ tastes, whether culinary or decorative.
