Historical gardening group comes to an end

AFTER almost 80 years Lancing Horticultural Society members have ‘sadly’ decided to dissolve the group due to a lack of interest.

Chairman Irene Livingston, 75, said it was a shame that the society had to come to an end, but there was no ‘fresh blood’ to take over from the current committee members.

She said: “It’s the end of an era. Everybody is extremely saddened, it’s a regretful situation.”

On Thursday, the society held its annual general meeting to elect new members for the committee, but nobody stepped forward.

“I received no nominations for any of the positions,” said Irene.

In an online statement, membership secretary Valerie Cole said there were more than 1,000 members in its heyday, but in recent years it had slipped to just under 200.

If there is someone who would like to revive the society and its flower shows, they should call chairman Irene on 01903 520701.
