The 39-year-old handed himself to police yesterday afternoon and was arrested on suspicion of careless/dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and drink driving. He remained in custody on Sunday evening.

A 21-year-old cyclist is in Hurstwood Park Hospital after being involved in the hit-and-run collision in Worthing in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The man, from Sompting, suffered a suspected fractured skull and vertebrae after apparently being in collision with a car that didn’t stop at the scene in Brighton Road at the junction with Windsor Road around 3.40am.

A police spokesman said: “He was taken to Worthing Hospital and later transferred to the specialist head injury hospital at Haywards Heath with a bleed on the brain.

“His condition on Sunday evening was described as serious, but stable.

“At that time of the morning there wouldn’t have been much traffic about so we are appealing for anyone who was in the area around the time to contact us if you witnessed the collision or if you saw a dark-coloured car that may have been involved. In particular, we would like to speak to a man and a woman who were at the scene, but left without leaving their details with police.

“Please email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting Operation Prague.”
