Holocaust Memorial Day in Worthing

A SERVICE to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) will take place in Worthing on January 27.

HMD recognises that the Holocaust was a tragically defining episode of the 20th Century and provides a national mark of respect for all victims of Nazi persecution.

The Worthing service will take place at The Tree of Life, in Beach House Park, at 11am. The theme for this year’s Memorial Day is journeys.

Event organiser and Worthing Councillor, Tom Wye, said: “We can learn how journeys themselves became part of genocide, and how the journeys undertaken were often experiences of persecution and terror for so many people who suffered in the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution and in the subsequent genocides.

“We can also learn about the life stories of journeys that brought survivors to the UK and how journeys of return have been part of the experience of rebuilding.”

Roger Berlin will say the Kaddish - the Jewish prayer for the dead - at the service.

He added: “The only way to prevent another Holocaust is to constantly remind ourselves what has been and what must never happen again. Only by knowing what has happened before can we prevent another tragedy. That is why an annual Holocaust Memorial Day is so important.”
