Huge blaze in Yapton as 40 tonnes of rubbish alight

Firefighters tackled a huge blaze in Yapton involving 40 tonnes of rubbish.

Crews from Littlehampton, Arundel and Bognor Fire Stations were called to the fire along with a water carrier from Petworth Fire Station last night (July 14), the fire service said. A spokesman confirmed the blaze was in an industrial unit off Yapton Road in Yapton around 8.30pm.

Nearby residents were urged to keep their windows closed while crews tackled the blaze. Firefighters using breathing apparatus and four covering jets sectorised the fire to control it and used a telehandler to remove waste for turning over. A water carrier and shuttle were also used. The spokesman said crews left the scene at 11.36pm after the fire was put out, but were due to return at 6am this morning (July 15), to reinspect the site.
