Hundreds mark Armistice Day at Worthing War Memorial

Worthing remembered the tragic loss of life in two world wars and other conflicts with a two-minute silence at the War Memorial in Chapel Road.

Hundreds gathered to mark Armistice day at 11am (continues below photos).

Children from Downsbrook Primary School joined the crowds and have also contributed to an exhibition of poems which will be displayed in the Town Hall foyer until Friday, November 18.

Sean McDonald, the mayor of Worthing, thanked everyone who came to pay their respects.

“I ask everyone to remember all the veterans past and present and all the serving men of the armed forces.
“Remember them all in your prayers,” he said.

This Sunday, Tomorrow, the town’s Remembrance Sunday service will be held at the War Memorial.

The two-minute silence will start at 11am, on the first stroke of the Town Hall clock, after which the mayor’s chaplain, Major Sarah Evans, will take the service.

Worthing mayor Sean McDonald, accompanied by the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex Mrs Susan Pyper, will lay poppy wreaths and take the salute at the march past in front of the Town Hall after the service, at approximately 11.30am.

Worthing’s Salvation Army Citadel Band, led by bandmaster Alan Slator, will play during the service and lead the march past.

Mr McDonald said: “I am extremely proud and humbled to represent my town and I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the many local organisations from Worthing and further afield who continue to support our annual Remembrance service and parade.

“I warmly invite everyone to join me at these Remembrance services to show their respect.”
