Hurstpierpoint man arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after life-threatening collision

A 51-year-old man from Hurstpierpoint has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after an 87-year-old woman suffered potentially life-threatening injuries in collision with his car in Worthing on Thursday (31 July).

Police are appealing for witnesses of the collision that occurred at 6.50pm as the woman was on or near a pedestrian crossing close to the junction of the B2223 Dominion Road with Southdown View Road.

She suffered serious injuries, including multiple fractures, and was flown by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital where she has been detained for treatment.

She is in a critical but stable condition.

The car involved was a silver Ford Focus estate and the driver was unhurt.

He has been bailed until 23 October while enquiries continue.

The road was closed for almost four hours while investigations at the scene took place, and police are grateful to motorists who were delayed or diverted for their patience.
