IAN HART: Is now the time to say enough is enough?

Unfortunately, on the flip side we had the usual anti-Islamic bile on social media and elsewhere. When will some realise that this atrocity horrifies all peace-loving people in the UK Muslim community as much as the rest of us?

The morning after the attack we have both the ‘tip toeing’ and Groundhog Day. First, numerous radio traffic reports across the networks report an incident in Manchester. It’s not an ‘incident’. It’s a terrorist attack, so please don’t dress it up with radio speak.

Then the revelation that the bomber, Salman Abedi, was known to the authorities – here we go again. It appears that every time something happens the perpetrator is on the police radar.

In Abedi’s case I think it’s even more worrying. A man whose parents were given sanctuary by this country from Colonel Gaddafi’s regime in Libya, educated here right up to university, a passionate supporter of Manchester United, yet can still be manipulated and brainwashed into sacrificing his own life whilst taking the lives of innocent youngsters in his cowardly act.

By yesterday morning, the authorities were prepared to reveal that there are actually in excess of 3,000 Jihadi suspects known to the police.

Is Manchester the point where as nation we say enough is enough? Do we now lock them up or deport them?

The do-gooders/human rights will no doubt throw their hands up and start bleating. But 22 predominantly young people murdered on an evening they went to a pop concert, with scores injured, tells its own horrific story.

Never mind Brexit, this will probably be the biggest challenge in the next prime minister’s political career. As a nation, whatever the colour of the winning party’s rosette, the next government should have the support of the whole country on this matter.
