Though both Hart youngsters are in their 20s, we also ‘borrowed’ two younger daughters from close friends, and a great day was had by all – mini golf followed by various rides at the amusement park topped off by a late lunch in the Fish Factory.

Nothing too fancy, but an enjoyable day out all the same.

Littlehampton is what it is. It plays to its strengths, and has done for decades, and testament to that is the influx of visitors still putting money into the local economy, year in, year out.

It’s been a couple of weeks since I commented in this column about the knock-on effect to Worthing of the cancellation of the Birdman rally.

As a town, we now have to look forward rather than back.

Yes, Birdman was fun, but having looked at the figures it clearly didn’t tick all the right boxes.

So, as Littlehampton has clearly identified, what does tick the boxes?

Looking back over Worthing’s history, what have we done well?

Despite the loss of the national bowling championships, which was out of our control, we still have top-class facilities along with fairly adequate hotel bed space.

With the £75,000 ‘saved’ from Birdman, along with additional sponsorship, why not put on a bowls singles championship with never-seen-before prize money – would that not only attract players from home and abroad, but also spectators as well?

With a number of available broadcasters it might even attract television coverage – but, above all, it will be an all-important shot in the arm to the local economy.

And it wouldn’t be something we know hasn’t worked before.
