IAN HART: Vibrant live music scene on our doorstep

After a period when a number of pubs regrettably had to close their doors, what remains of the Worthing public house community appears to be enjoying a rejuvenation in the shape of one of the most traditional aspects of pub life.

People have been playing music in pubs for as long as they’ve been serving drinks – even the worst of bands (and I’ve seen a few) manage to create a unique atmosphere.

While a number of local acts have been around for a number years, recently the ranks have been joined by a number of new-ish acts, leaving Worthing and the surrounding areas with a vibrant live music scene.

Venues such as The Warwick, Rose and Crown, George and Dragon, The Thomas A Becket and the newly-refurbished Egremont regularly attract large crowds on their live music nights and in some cases afternoons.

While I enjoy a varied musical taste it’s only in recent years that I’ve specifically gone to pubs to watch a band – I’m clearly not alone and that can only be good for the local economy.

Over the past year I’ve seen Synth 101, The Majors, Soundhouse, Murdoch’s Crazy Eyes, Big Yellow Taxi, Mark Wright, Danny Powell and Sam Flynn, the Juke Box Junkies and Steve Smiley’s Johnny Cash Tribute Act and Rock and Roll Show, and would recommend them all.

With the plethora of quality music venues we have in the town, it can only be a win-win situation for landlords, punters and musicians.

Cincinnati Zoo has the been in the news this week, for all the wrong reasons, after Harambe the gorilla was shot dead by keepers after a four-year-old boy fell into his enclosure.

Is the issue of the child’s parents alleged neglect, while attracting a large amount of attention, actually relevant?

People will have their opinions on the conduct of these adults, but ultimately the zoo authorities had to make a call and very quickly.

Damned if they do, damned if they don’t and, as sad as having to shoot an animal is, at least there’s not footage going around of a child being mauled.
