James, who narrowly missed out on an offer of a place at Cambridge earlier in the year, said: “It is great. I was worried this morning as I looked at my results and saw they were what I needed, but I didn’t do as well in the entry tests for Warwick. I was only a two marks off, though, so they accepted me anyway.”

Michael said the Oxford interview process - renowned for its tricky questions - was not as bad as expected.

He will study physics, after being offered a place following three days of questioning.

“We are proud of each other,” said James.

“Sixth form colleges and Worthing in particular have earned recognition and deserve greater support. MPs intend to have further meetings with ministers to remove unnecessary burdens and to allow the college to help students of all abilities and backgrounds to learn, to train and to contribute in all ways possible.”
