Inspectors praise '˜outstanding' care at Worthing home

The Shelley Care Home, in Shelley Road, Worthing, achieved the top rating in three of the five areas rated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors from the CQC praised staff at the home, who they said were trained to an ‘excellent standard’.

The areas of leadership, effectiveness and caring were hailed as outstanding, while responsiveness and safety were rated good.

The report, which was published in December, said: “Training was arranged to meet people’s specific needs and some staff were ‘champions’ in particular areas such as infection control and diabetes management.

“People were treated with dignity and respect by kind and caring staff who knew them well and staff put people first.

“The owner and registered manager were role models and led by example.”

The report said residents were ‘overwhelmingly positive’ about the food at the home and inspectors described the atmosphere at mealtimes as ‘lively and inviting’.

Marlene Sanders, who owns the care home, said: “We could not have achieved these outstanding results without the dedication and hard work from every single member of our outstanding team who truly know our residents, genuinely care and always go that extra mile to ensure that the little things that matter indeed make a huge difference and make The Shelley sparkle.”

Inspectors asked the home what they had done to provide ‘person-centred’ care for residents. The report said: “One staff member said that one person, who was feeling a little down was asked what would cheer them up.

“The person replied that seeing Harrison Ford walk through the door would work. As a result, staff obtained a life-sized cardboard cut-out of Harrison Ford and gave it to the person as a surprise present.”

Marlene added the home has a lot to celebrate, especially after marking the tenth anniversary of the home.

Marlene said: “We were delighted to hear that at the West Sussex Care Accolades our manager Nada Wakeford had been awarded Care Manager of The Year 2015 and Julie Shepherd was named runner up in the Ancillary Staff of The Year category.”

Marlene said there were celebrations at the home after found out the results of the inspection from the CQc.

“Nothing could stop residents, relatives and staff celebrating in style with lots of bubbly, tears and laughter when we were told that The Shelley had been awarded the rating of outstanding after its recent inspection.

“This means that The Shelley is the first care home in Worthing to receive this rating and one of only two so far in West Sussex.”

“To date only 18 [in the UK] homes have now received this rating.

“Congratulations quickly followed from delighted relatives, suppliers and health professionals.”

One of the residents of the home even wrote a poem to celebrate the news.

Valerie Manor in Upper Beeding was the first care home in West Sussex to receive an outstanding rating from the CQC.
