TRIBUTES have been paid to the “inspiring” former headmaster of a Sompting School.
Richard Johnson had been a teacher at Sompting Abbotts Preparatory School, in Church Lane, since 1975.
After initially teaching geography, he went on to teach English and become deputy headmaster at the school, before gaining the role of headmaster in 1994.
He retired from the school in 2005, after only intending to stay for five years, and gave a leaving presentation to staff and pupils.
Patricia Sinclair, principal at the school, said: “Everyone who came in contact with him was swept along with his enthusiasm and optimism – an ebullient man. On his retirement in 2005, staff and pupils were able to show their appreciation by attending a leaving presentation on the school terrace on a sparkling summer’s evening. Ex pupils will have much to reminisce.”
Mr Johnson’s funeral will be held at Worthing Crematorium, in Horsham Road, at 1pm tomorrow.
Family flowers only, but donations can be made to Sompting Abbots Preparatory School, and in particular to the Richard Johnson Memorial Cup fund.
