Investigation launched into cause of fatal fire

Sussex Police has confirmed a full investigation is being carried out into the cause of a fire which claimed the life of a woman in Littlehampton this afternoon (Saturday, October 10).

Emergency services were called to Harwood Road shortly after midday to reports of property on fire with persons inside.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after midday on Saturday (October 10) police, fire and ambulance were called to a terraced period property in Harwood Road, Littlehampton, following reports of a fire.

“Strenuous efforts were made to rescue the occupants and while two adults were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation, sadly a woman in the property was found to have died.

“The full circumstances of the fire are being investigated. At present the cause remains unexplained.

“Harwood Road, North Ham Road and Fort Road were subject to road closures while emergency services were at the scene.

“The West Sussex coroner has been informed.

“Anyone who saw what happened at the time the fire broke out or who may have any other relevant information is asked to email [email protected] or call 101, quoting serial 634 of 10/10.”
