IT centre is a ‘much needed’ new facility

A NEW IT centre which will provide ‘much needed’ facilities and training opportunities for residents has opened at a Worthing community centre.

Heene Community Centre, in Heene Road, has been kitted out with new computers, primarily to provide internet access for the unemployed, disabled and disadvantaged.

It was opened by mayor and mayoress Vic and Rosemary Walker, with town crier Bob Smytherman and 40 guests in attendance.

IT manager Noel Atkins said: “Heene Community Association is located in an area of natural deprivation, high unemployment and where a significant number of residents are digitally excluded, while job seekers are feeding back that approximately 90 per cent of jobs require some computer competency.

“The new computer centre plans to train job seekers how to search the Internet, apply online and attach electronic CVs.

“Income would be generated from sales to both public sector organisations and end users.”

He added: “We will provide these much needed facilities and training for the unemployed, the disabled and the disadvantaged, along with ‘speak easy’ computer systems for the blind and visually impaired.”

The new IT centre was created with funding support from West Sussex County Council.
