Jan and hearing dog Josie set up new lip-reading class

NEW lip-reading classes are being taken by a teacher who is profoundly deaf and aided in her daily life by her trained hearing dog.

Janice Lambert has started classes at Bexhill College but more applicants are needed.

The Thursday evening classes are from 7pm until 9pm.

Jan has been profoundly deaf for 21 years. She lost her hearing overnight when seven months pregnant with her second child.

She has been a lip-reading teacher for 10 years, teaching in adult education in Kent where she had nine classes in six centres in Ashford, Folkestone, Dover, Sittingbourne and Deal.

Jan moved to Bexhill four months ago from Folkestone, settling in well with her hearing dog, Josie and two cats.

She says she would love to teach at Bexhill College but the class will only succeed if people interested in the skill of lip-reading enrol.

"Hearing people are most welcome too."

Jan says: "Josie the hearing dog is a small Sheltie breed - a mini Lassie! She has just had her third birthday and grows with intelligence every day."

Josie remembers 10 "sound" commands to alert Jan in her home, work and social life.

"Josie loves people and is very friendly." She will be accompanying Jan to her classes every week.
