IT was the first short mat bowls club in the area, and now it has celebrated a milestone birthday.
Lancing and District Short Mat Bowls Club, which meets at St Peter’s Hall, in Bowness Avenue, Sompting, celebrated its 25th birthday this month.
The club was the first of its kind in the area, and since then others have sprung up in the district to meet the demand of those interested in the sport.
Leila Gatland, honorary member, said the club was a friendly one open to players of all ages and standards from the area.
She said: “We’ve had 25 years of teaching bowls and playing matches.
“We were the first short mat bowls club in the area, from which other short mat bowls clubs have sprung up, allowing local people of all ages to take part in the sport.”
The club meets every Tuesday at 7pm.
As well as offering free tuition to those who are newer to the game, the club also takes part in matches and competitions.
