A Lancing bricklayer's hairy legs were given a smooth new look after he volunteered to have his limbs waxed by his friends, raising £200 for charity.

Karl Daly came forward to take part in the fundraising event at the Hair and Beauty Boutique in North Road in aid of St Barnabas Hospice after he saw a request for participants on social media.

The 27-year-old from Shoreham said: “It seemed a good idea at the time – I thought it would be a laugh and raise some money for a very worthwhile cause.”

Friends and family gathered around and paid to take it turns to plaster waxy strips onto Karl’s legs before tearing them off.

Afterwards, he admitted it was ‘incredibly painful’ and he was not going to repeat the experience.

According to owner Sarah Norman, who organised the event, one of the keenest wax strip pullers was Karl’s girlfriend, 25-year-old Rhiannon Phillips.

Reminding him of small domestic incidents from the previous week before rippping the strips off, she said: “That’s a good way of releasing frustration and tension from a relationship!”

Sarah said: “Karl was visibly in pain when having his hairy legs waxed.

“He was brilliant to take part in this fundraising activity – it really helped raise aware of our event, but more importantly raised funds to help support St Barnabas Hospice.”

Sarah said she had always been a keen supporter of St Barnabas Hospice, adding: “My mum died in the hospice 13 years ago. They do so much for people – looking after the family as well as people needing palliative care.“

A raffle also helped boost the total raised with both customers and members of the Lancing business community.
