A manicurist from Lancing is taking part in a world record attempt to paint 6,078 pairs of nails – to represent every person who lost their life to suicide in 2015.

Andrea Heatley, of Hurstfield, who has worked at Lancing’s Belles Beaus and Beauty Clinic for the last three years, is one of 350 manicurists taking part in the event on Sunday at the 02’s Intercontinental Hotel.

The team hope to paint as many nails as possible in green glitter within eight hours to raise £30,000 for charities MIND and Nailing Mental Health which, once registed, will help people pay for private therapy or counselling to avoid the long NHS waiting lists.

Andrea decided to take part because of her own experience of mental health issues.

“I’ve suffered from bouts of depression, but I managed to get myself through it,” the 33-year-old said.

“I was lucky enough to get support when I needed it and I have a good network of people around me.

“But a lot of other people don’t have that.”

She said she expects the Nailing Mental Health event, set up by celebrity manicurist Stephanie Staunton who has also suffered with mental health issues, to be a ‘long’ but ‘really good’ day.

She hopes it will raise awareness of an issue which she feels ‘overlooked quite a lot’.
