A ‘small number’ of travellers are currently occupying the grounds of the independent school, in The Drive.

However, a spokeswoman from Adur and Worthing councils said the authorities, alongside with West Sussex County Council and Sussex Police, were ‘aware of the arrival’ of the group at the college this morning and that it was ‘our understanding that the encampment will be leaving the site later this afternoon’.

The travellers’ arrival comes weeks after a similar group occupied the nearby Southwick Green.

On this occasion, police were able to use new powers to move them on the Chichester transit site.

This week, Adur District Council’s cabinet member for health and well-being David Simmons, welcomed the increased police powers, saying it would mean Adur was ‘no longer a soft touch’ to the travelling community.
