Landscape in pastels inspires club members

Colin Courtice from Brockenhurst, gave a demonstration to Felpham Art Group of a landscape done in pastels, of which he is a specialist.

After art school, he started with general illustrations in Fleet Street, before starting his own graphic design business and finally branching out into pastels, which he loves.

Using soft pastels and special pastel paper, he prepares his paintings by doing charcoal sketches and eases himself into the picture.

Sketching a rough outline of part of the picture in charcoal, in this case a stone bridge over the River Avon, he continued in pastels using purple colours.

He worked on the foliage on trees stressing how important it is to let the light come through, going for darks and lights to make the picture interesting.

His commentary was clear, interesting and concise and we all felt like having a go at pastels.

Time being against Colin, members felt they had learnt a lot and had a enjoyable afternoon especially as this was the last demonstration of the season.
