There is a large emergency response to a fire in Littlehampton town centre.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said they were dealing with a fire involving the solar panels on the roof of St Joseph’s Nursing Home and convent in East Street, Littlehampton.

They said: “We were called at 9.30am to reports of a fire in a residential building on East Street in Littlehampton. Crews from Littlehampton, East Preston, Arundel and Worthing have been mobilised to the scene along with the Incident Command Unit from Bognor Regis and the Aerial Ladder Platform from Worthing.

Residents living nearby are asked to keep windows and doors closed for the time being.”

Police officers were sent to the scene to help the fire brigade with road closures and evacuating residents to a school nearby.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said it had several units on scene, including the Hazardous Area Response Team.

There were no reports of serious injuries so far, they said, but paramedics were working with firefighters to assess those affected and see whether they need further hospital treatment.
