LATEST: Children arrested over haystack blaze

TWO children have been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire which destroyed tonnes of hay in Sompting on Sunday evening.

The two boys, aged 12 and 13, were apprehended nearby and have been bailed until April 11.

Firefighters were called to the blaze which broke out on farmland off Halewick Lane at 4.40pm on Sunday.

The caller who raised the alarm reported having seen children acting suspiciously nearby, shortly before the haystack burst into flames.

The fire engulfed a stack of 150 large hay bales which was well alight when crews from Worthing and Shoreham arrived at the scene.

Firefighters spent most of Sunday evening tackling the fire and damping down around the perimeter to stop the flames from spreading.

One crew remained at the scene overnight to monitor the fire, which was left to burn out under supervision.

No one was injured during the incident.

Police were alerted to the haystack fire at by firefighters at 4.45pm.

Around 150 bales worth £1500 were destroyed by the fire.
