Legal battle on the horizon as Sea Cadets face losing their venue

Commanding officer Lt Vicky Milligan said they felt they had no choice but to go to court to protect their place in the centre, which has been their home since the 1980s.
“We are reluctant to take this step as it is a waste of time and resources,” she said. “Both organisations are small local charities run by volunteers with limited resources.

Hide Ad“We are spending a lot of time on this, which would be time better spent providing activities for our young people. We initially hoped to go to mediation but the Village Centre did not want to do so.”
Alison Martin, whose daughter Jodie, 14, goes to cadets, said: “Since joining Horsham Sea Cadets two years ago, Jodie has gained a BTEC Level One in Teamwork, Personal Skills and Citizenship at no cost, been dinghy sailing and rowing and gained her RYA yachting Competent Crew sailing from Newcastle to Edinburgh.”
Judith Butler, whose daughter Amy joined cadets when she was ten, said there are few things for young people in Broadbridge Heath to do. “Amy has really come out of herself since joining Horsham Sea Cadets,” she said. “She has taken part in district and area competitions and met people from other parts of the country on weekend courses camping and boating and she is really looking forward to a week boating in Weymouth with the cadets in the summer holidays.”
Colin Edwards, chairman of the Broadbridge Heath Village Centre Committee, said they had been informed that the Sea Cadets were bringing a legal case against the centre, but could not comment while the action was in progress.
