Lib Dems name prospective parliamentary candidate for Arundel and South Downs seat

A COUNTY councillor will be hoping to make it third time lucky when he stands for election to parliament at the next general election.

Derek Deedman '“ the serving county councillor for Bramber Castle division '“ has been chosen as the Liberal Democrats' prospective parliamentary candidate for the Arundel and South Downs constituency.

The current member of parliament for the constituency is Conservative Nick Herbert, who is Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

After being nominated, Mr Deedman said he was "honoured" to be selected as his party's candidate for a third time.

He added: "With the next general election due within barely 15 months, it is likely that the economy will be the main issue in the campaign.

"The Liberal Democrats were the only party nationally to forecast that the Labour government policies were leading to economic disaster, and are now the only party to have the policies to lead us out of the current recession."

At the last general election, in 2005, the Liberal Democrats saw their share of the vote increased by nearly five per cent, one of the best increases for the party in the south east, while the Conservative party's share of the vote fell below 50 per cent.

Mr Deedman added: "With Labour already in third place, and their vote currently in freefall from their 17 per cent share in 2005, there is a great opportunity for the Lib Dems to win the constituency for the first time."
