Library celebrates 40th anniversary with party

The occasion was attended by some of the library’s ten members of staff and a number of regulars who turned out to offer their support.

The highlight of the day was when Clare Seaman was named winner of the library’s photograph competition.

Her snap of a glass orb reflecting the beach huts at Beach Green stole first prize, a framed enlargement of the photo.

The prize was awarded by Lancing county councillor Mike Glennon.

Speaking after the event, senior library assistant Yvonne Ellis, who has worked there for 24 years, said she had seen a lot of changes during her time at the library.

“The biggest change has been self-service, which has happened in the last 18 months,” she said.

“People can issue and discharge their own books now, which frees staff up to do other things.”

After the celebration, which included a cake and refreshments, a group of around 15 children came in to hear stories about birthday parties and make their own party hats.

“Here’s to the next 40 years!” said Yvnonne.
