The Littlehampton Coastguard was also called to the scene.

The dog was rescued by the lifeboat crew and handed over to the Coastguards on the beach and its owner.

The Coastguard said: “The owner did the correct thing in calling the Coastguard.

“We always urge people not to go after animals in difficulty, call 999, ask for the Coastguard and if possible remain somewhere visible (and safe) so rescue teams and your pet can see you.”
