Lloyds donates £3,000 to hospice

St Barnabas House, on Titnore Lane, has been handed £3,000 by Lloyds Bank Community Fund to purchase an ultra-low bed for patients.

Marketing officer Charlotte Leng says the bed would enable the hospice to provide a safer care environment for patients with a higher risk of falling out of bed or when attempting to stand.

“The risk of a fall occurring has been shown to greatly reduce when using a bed of this style, compared to a standard bed,” she said.

“Due to their age and effects of their illness, many patients are frail with the side effect of their medication often causing a degree of disorientation, increasing the risk of a fall.

“Such a bed will be made available to those patients who, following the completion of an individual patient fall risk assessment on admission, are deemed to be at the greatest risk of a fall. It is our intention to ultimately replace all our standard beds with ultra-low beds.”
