THE children of Millfield in Sompting have developed green thumbs this week as they harvest their very own vegetables in a new local initiative.
Launched by the Sompting Big Local – a community-focused organisation run by the Local Trust – the new vegetable patch was created to rehabilitate an area previously overgrown with bramble.
A sum of £2,325 from West Sussex County Council’s community initiative funding has made the sprouting herbs, vegetables and fruit a possibility.
Jacqui Matten, who leads the project, said her personal mission was to tackle areas of depravation in Sompting.
“The kids are chuffed to bits that it’s all growing,” said the 50-year-old.
“The patch used to belong to the parish council and then it was handed over to the housing association where nothing had been done and it was all overgrown. Now chopping it all back has made it more visible and people say they feel much safer,” she added.
With kind donations from the community including gardening tools, Jacqui has managed to save a lot of money which will allow her to keep the vegetable patch running for a further two years.
