Local star to turn on Bognor Christmas lights

Footballers' Wives actor Ben Richards will be adding some sparkle to the Bognor Regis festive lights switch-on.

The star, who grew up in the area and went on to find fame in The Bill, will be making a guest appearance on Saturday, November 28.

As a former pupil of Art of Dance and Fitness, run by his sister Lisa Richards and Tracey Betes, he will be dropping into the group to lend support for its latest Christmas appeal.

Activities will take place throughout the day, with a traditional fairground organ entertaining shoppers from 10am and the Salvation Army band playing outside Boots during the early afternoon.

A room at the Regis Centre will be transformed into a sparkling grotto where children can meet Santa.

This will be open from 10.30am until 12.30pm and then again from 1.30pm until 3pm. A raffle and various tombolas and games for both adults and children will also be run in the theatre.

The switch-on will take place in front of the William Hardwicke pub and entertainment will begin at 3pm with the Revusicals. Art of Dance and Fitness will be performing and the stars of the local pantomime, Peter Pan, will also put in an appearance.

The seafront train will transport the VIPs from the theatre, through the town and along to the William Hardwicke in time for the switch-on at 4.30pm.

Chairman of the town council's Christmas illuminations sub-committee, Cllr Jeanette Warr, said: "We are delighted that Ben has agreed to take part in our switch-on event. He grew up in Bognor Regis and it is wonderful that he is able to support the town in this way."

Arun District Council has agreed to allow free parking in Fitzleet multi-storey car park during the day.
