LORRY BURSTS INTO FLAMES

ONE of the busiest roads in West Sussex, the A23, was closed at Sayers Common, near Burgess Hill on Monday afternoon after a lorry appeared to burst into flames.

The driver, who managed to escape, was left seriously injured with burns and was flown by police helicopter to New East Surrey Hospital.

The accident at 3.50pm caused long tailbacks and it took until 5.10pm until the fire was totally extinguished. It was believed the lorry overturned following a collision involving a tractor.
